ATHLETIC CARNIVAL.
TRACK EVENTS POSTPONED. TWO CROSS-COUNTRY RACES. The Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, after making complete arrangements for the holding of the fifty miles New Zealand amateur cycling road race championship carnival this afternoon, has met with further disappointment owing to the track conditions at Alexandra Park. Ever since the June meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club the weather has been unfavourable, and grass-cutting, topdressing and rolling have not. been possible and will not be practicable until some days of fine weather are experienced. On Thursday there appeared to be a reasonable chance of deciding the programme of cycling, track, cross-country and field events, but overnight rain blackened the outlook, and late yesterday afternoon the chairman of the works committee reluctantly had to declare against, the centre holding the carnival. A conference was held, at which it was arranged that the New Zealand cycle road race championship should start from the Sir John Logan Campbell monument, thence out to Clevedon and back to the monument. In addition, the two crosscountry races will be decided on the outside of the trotting track. Only the three events named will be contested, the remainder of tho programme being postponed until the following Saturday. This new turn of events means a serious monetary loss to the Auckland centre, which has to meet a fairly heavy bill of expenses, with no chance of reimbursing itself. However, the executive views the position philosophically, and with a busy season in sight anticipates making good the loss in the early part of the new season.
