AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. ROBERTS DEFEATS VALENTINE. • . A finished display was given by E. y. Roberts in defeating H. F. Valentine in the second round of the Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship last evening. There \\ as a large attendance. Roberts was generally expected to ■win, but Valentine was a worthy opEonent, and played a fine uphill game. At is third visit he set the game going with a run of 24, Roberts replying with a good break of 70. The champion was first to reach the centurv-mark, and his 18th cue resulted in a break of 47, made
at the top of the table. Valentine, who bad. missed ' several easy shots, made a run of 23, but failed when the balls were in a favourable position. Roberts ■was playing well, and with breaks of 39, 25, and 39, he ran up a lead of 100. ' Valentine made strenuous efforts to reduce the lead, and in consecutive visits to the table made breaks of 17, 23, 54, 14 and 2-0. Roberts replied with a nicely-made 60, and holding the advantage ran out the winner by 125 points. The final scores were:—E. V. Roberts, 500. Breaks: 70, 47, 139, 25, 39, 58' and 60; average, 10.3. H. F. Valentine, 375. Breaks: 24, 23, 35, 54, 20 and 22; average, 8,9. The last game of the second round will 1)3 played this evening between R. Fredatovich/and H. Rae. After this the draw for the semi-final will be made.
