WIDENING OF STREETS.

MOUNT ROSKILL PROVISION. Giving heed to numerous instances of main thoroughfares proving too narrow for modern traffic, the Mount Roskill Road Board has taken time by the forelock and secured the consent of the ratepayers concerned to comprehensive provision for an ultimate widening, by agreeing to construct all buildings at least 7ft. back from the present boundary. By this provision the cost of widening will be reduced to a minimum, ,if and when it becomes necessary, and the owners have entered heartily into the scheme, recognising the great advantage of ultimately facing a street 80ft., wide,'instead of only 66ft. A by-law was framed accordingly, making the setting back compulsory. An' unexpected difficulty was disclosed at the meeting of the board this week ■when an application was received for permission to enlarge a shop at the corner of Pah Road and Mount Albert Road, by continuing the addition on the old street frontage. The board decided to waive the by-law in this case, seeing that if ever it became necessary io widen the road and pay compensation for the building already there, the extra, amount for the addition would be merely nominal, out of all proportion to the inconvenience meantime occasioned by the footpath having two widths.
