THE INCOME TAX.
Sir, —While the unfortunate gentleman -,Vith the £6OO a year has got it well and truly in the neck with an increase of 38.38 per cent, to digest, the £650 man gets home with 24.77, while the £7OO is quite mercifully treated with 16.56. The £750 a year man has, however, drawn the iucky ailey with an increase of 11.11 only, and £BOO has not inuch to complain of with 13.80. From then the expert responsible for his wonderful scale has eaten something that disagreed with him, for after returning , from lunch he promptly puts the £BSO millionaire up 16.14, the £9OO by 18.18, the £IOOO income by 20 per cent. The scoundrel who draws £ISOO evidently requires to be dealt with, for lie is put up to 26.66. From the £2OOO mark the true story is revealed—the villain enters—viz., the more salary earned, the less the increase. It is worth repeating. the percentages decrease from this on: £ISOO, 26.66 increase; £2OOO, 24.10 per cent.; £2500, 22.31 per cent. ; £3OOO, 21.00 per cent.; £3500 . 20 per cent.; £3900, 19.35 per cent,; £4OOO, 18.42 per cent.; £SOOO, 10.57 per cent.; £5900, 6.02 per cent.; £6OOO, 5 per cent.; £7OOO, 2.93 per cent.; £BOOO, 1.13 per cent. And the £4OOO-£BOOO crowd said with one accord: "These men know what they are doing; they should be knighted or receive much purple and fine linen, for verily, they have cared for their own." Victim.
