BUSY DAY AT HAMILTON. FINAL PRACTICE ROUNDS. 'A. D. S. DUNCAN'S FINE SCORE. OPEN CONTEST STARTS TO-DAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.— SFECIAI. REPORTER.] HAMILTON. Thursday. Nominally a free day at St. Andrews links, Hamilton, competitors at the New Zealand golf championship tourney made to-day a busy one and took advantage of the fine -weather tc engage in practice rounds, many of which were productive 4 of fine scores'. One of the brightest features of the day's practice rounds was the magnificent putting which enabled A. D. S. Duncan to counter-balance a number of indifferent tee shots and cover the course in 73, which is three better than par and seven under bogey. It was a result achieved in a four-ball game productive of three other fine cards, those of Sloan Morpeth, H. B. Lusk .and T. H, Horton, who returned scores of 76, 77 and 79 respectively. Duncan's card read: — Out: 3, 5, 4, 5, 4, 4, 5, 4, 4—38. In: 3, 3, 3, 4, 3, 5, 6, 4, 4-35. B. V. Wright, of Timaru, after going ®ut in 40, equal to bogey, played crisp golf, to come home in 37. Two former New Zealand amateur champions, J. Goss and L. Quin, ended a four-ball with J. M. Hussey and A. J. Shaw'all square. The New Zealand open champion, Shaw, was playing soundly from the tee to the green, but displayed an inclination to putt short. F. C. Fryer and Kapi Tarcha, who yesterday won the New Zealand amateur foursomes championship, went down to E. J. Moss arid A. G. Sime, the latter pair allowing a 5 at the 17th, where Moss lost a ball. Moss* round was equal to 75, Tareha's 76, Sime's 77, and Fryer's 79.

The Hutt pair, J. L. Black and H. A. Black, went round in 79 and 81 respectively. H. A. Black's 37 for the inward journey was an effective offset to his 44 going out. A 76 by Norris Bell, of Hamilton, a 75 by J. R. Galloway, and a 76 by T. Galloway were among the best cards. Punctually at 8.30 to-morrow morning a start will be made with the open championship, played concurrently with the qualifying rounds for the amateur and professional championships.
