OPOSSUM HUNTING.
MAN HEAVILY FINED. SEQUEL TO EXCITING CHASE. At the Police Court at Inverell, New South Wales, recently, Percy Edward Duncan pleaded not guilty to a charge of having in his possession 156 opossum skins. Evidence was given that accused's capture had been the result of an exciting chase by the police. A constable followed him in a car to Inverell from Ashford, after notifying the Inverell police to meet him on the road. Duncan was met near Inverell about 9 p.m., but when signalled to stop he accelerated his car, and, avoiding the police, dashed toward Inverell. Picking up a colleague the constable continued the pursuit, and, just as they overtook accused the latter threw a chaff bag out of his car arid continued his flight. The police called on him to stop, but he kept on until two shots were fired, one of which punctured a tyre. Returning, the police picked up the bag, which was found to contain 156 opossum skins. Duncan was convicted mil fined £39 (5s per. skin), with £lO 2s costs.
