RELIEF FROM FLOODING

POSITION OF EDENDALE. WIDENING MEOLA CREEK. IMPROVEMENT WORK URGED. The necessity for pushing on with the proposed improvement work along the Meola Creek was urged upon the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board by a deputation representing the Mount Albert and Mount Eden Borough Councils last evening. It was pointed out the new section of the No. 1 sewer from the Mount Eden borough boundary and through Cabbage Treo Swamp, now in courso of construction, could not be used until the creek had been considerably widened and new culverts made to carry away the stoVmwater. The necessity for pushing on with the No. 8 branch sewer, which will drain the Edendale district, was also emphasised. It was stated tho position in Edendale was acute. Since tho continuation of Dominion Road and Balmoral Road had been concreted, the water had streamed down in torrents. Photographs were produced, one depicting a house surrounded by water almost to the level of the window sills. It was stated that large areas of land were also becoming so waterlogged that building operations had had to be restricted. The chairman, Mr. G. Baildon, pointed out it was not until last December that Mount Albert and Mount Eden had agreed to an arrangement to relieve the position, and blame could scarcely be levelled at the Drainage Board for the flooding. The engineer had investigated the question, and expected to complete plans for the work in six weeks or two months. After tho deputation had withdrawn .Mr. J. Davis said that if the creek were cleared of the branches of trees, metal, and stones in it the banking up of water could be avoided. Mr. L. E. Rhodes, Mayor of Mount Albeit, said that until, the culverts were % duplicated or enlarged the water would never be got rid of. The only thing to do was to push on with permanent work, and a contract should be let at the earliest possible moment to allow the work to be proceeded with during the summer. <! If you had come to an agreement two years ago all your troubles would now be over," commented Mr. Baildon. The matter of proceeding with the improvement work along the Meola Creek was referred to the Works Committee, with authority to call tenders.
