CHANNEL SWIMMERS.
MANY WOMEN ASPIRANTS. FAILURE OF ALL ATTEMPTS. A. and N.Z. LONDON, Aug. 30. A sudden temporary return of summer was responsible for a rush of Channel swimmers, ranging from Miss Jamsen, a Danish girl 17 years old, to Dr. Schiff, a German, aged 65. Others were Miss MacLennan (Dr. ' Dorothy Logan, of Harley Street), Misses Hawke and Harding, and Mrs. "Wiedman, of England. These all started .from Cape Grisnez at various times in the morning, but were forced to - abandon the swim owing to choppy seas. Miss MacLennan, who attempted the swim last year and remained in the water 25 hours, swam on this occasion for 14 hours and covered 13 miles. Miss Jamsen was seized with cramp after swimming for four and a-half hours. Miss Harding was in the water for seven and a-half hours and swam for the last hour in a state of coma. She collapsed as she was .dragged into the tug and was unconscious for an hour. Miss Hawke was far out of her course after seven hours in the water. Dr. Schiff for seven hours ■ battled against cross currents and then became faint. He was rescued with difficulty. The cliffs at, Dover were crowded with disappointed onlookers.
