FINE BOWLING BY KENNEDY. NOTTS LEADS LANCASHIRE. (Received August 31, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LO2sDON, Aug. 30. The end of the cricket season provided an exciting struggle between Lancashire and Notts for the county championship. The outright victory of Notts to-day over Derbyshire, while Lancashire only ob tained a first innings' lead against Leicestershire, virtually decided the issue, and sent Notts to the top of the table, with a percentage of 70.37. Lancashire has 68.75 points, Yorkshire 62.54 and Kent 62.01. Notts cannot be displaced from winning the championship unless it most unexpectedly loses 'outright the last match against Glamorganshire. The result of the matches which ended to-day are as follows: —Flaying against Surrey, Middlesex, in the first innings, made" 54 (Fender seven for 10), and m the second, 322 for nine, declared (Hearne 167 not out). Surrey, in the first innings, made 149 (Hearne eight for 39), and in the second 229 for five (Hobbs 54, Sandham 55, Ducat 51). Surrey won by five wickets. Playing against Essex, Kent, m the first innings, made 225 (Hardinge 61, Franklin four for 40), and in the second 388 for seven, declared (Hardinge 51, Ashdown 117, Woolley 101). Essex, in the first innings; made 360 (Wykes 162, Franklin 56), and in the second 123 (Wright five 'for 45). Kent won by 130 runs. Playing against Yorkshire, Sussex, m the first innings, made 221 (A. E. Gilligan 51 not out, Macaulay five for 83). and in the second 120 (Kilner five for 21). Yorkshire, in the first innings, made 302 (Leyland 57, Kilner 91 not out, Tate five for "64), and in the second 43 for one wicket. Yorkshire won bv nine wickets. For Leicestershire against Lancashire, Shipman made 120. For Lancashire, Watson made 111, Geary five for 59. Lancashire won on the first innings. For Warwickshire against Hampshire, Wyatt made 117. For Hampshire Kennedy took seven wickets for 8 runs. Hampshire won. For Gloucestershire against Northants Hammond made 193. Parker, in the first innings, took seven for 61, and in the second eight for 112. Gloucestershire won. For Derbyshire against Notts, Storer made 106. For Notts, Payton made 136. S. Staples, five for 83. Notts won. For Glamorganshire against Somersetshire, Clay took five for 41. Glamorganshire won. Kennedy, the Hampshire bowler, who, in a recent match took all 10 wickets, to-dav achieved the most notable of the season by taking seven of the Warwickshire wickets for 8 runs.' He bowled 10 overs, seven maidens, and obtained his last six wickets in three overs for four runs. As a result, Warwickshire was dismissed for 36 runs, the lowest county score of the season. In the final match of the American women's lawn tennis championship singles Miss Helen WiLls, who holds the British title, defeated the young English player, Miss Betty Nuthall, 6—l, 6—4. The doubles championship was won by a British pair. All the last four were British, and Mrs. Godfree and Miss Harvey defeated Miss Nuthall and Miss Fry, 6—l, 4—6, 6—4. NEW ZEALAND HOCKEY TEAM. FINAL MATCH OF TOUP* WON. (Received August 31, 9.10 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNE\, Aug. .11. A Metropolitan hockey team was today defeated by 3 goals to 2 by the Now Zealand touring team. This was the visitors' final match in Australia. The New Zealand players were:—Fletcher, L. Spiers, Soper, Mahoney, Morris, Horc, Worsfold, Seccombe, Bell, Watts and II Spiers. Soon after the commencement of the game Bell scored. Fletcher made a clever save from a strong Metropolitan attack. The New Zealanders immediately made a strong attack, forcing the game, and strongly besieging the local goal, but they hit too hard to score. At half-time the scores were: New Zealand, 1; Metropolitan, 0. In the second half the New Zealanders made a determined attack on the local goal and scored twice-' After a strong rally. Metropolitan carried the attack to the enemy's stronghold and . scored. Immediately afterwards another strong local attack resulted in a further score. In Hie last few minutes the game was strenuously contested, Metropolitan making a desperate effort to even the score, but this thev failed to do.
