The New Zealand cricketers to-day commenced a match against Cumberland at Whitehaven There was no play before lunch owing to ram. The county won the toss and batted first.' Youren and Gill, the opening pair, took the score to 36, but, the next two •wickets fell cheaply. Youren batted for sn, hour and hit two fours and three threes. Shardlow scored 12 in a single over off the New Zealand captain, Lowry. Thomas was out, to a fine catch by McGirr on the leg boundary. The last five wickets only added 52, Mcrritt being responsible for the collapse of the last four men. Blunt and Dempster gave the New Zealanders a fine start, after Oliver had been dismissed for one Blunt was m;ssed when he had made 10 He and his partner had taken the* total to 117, and were still undefeated when stumps were drawn. Lancashire had made 229 in their first innings and New Zealand 57 for one wicket.
