TRAM FARES.
Sir, —Despite adverse criticism of the proposed changes in train fares I think these changes are in the right direction, though perhaps needing some adjustment. The first sections were too long, but now some are too short. As for those who prefer to build at a distance from the city, they have the advantage of cheap land, easy building by-laws, low rates, etc., and should not object to pay a reasonable tram fare. For a long time past they have been riding into town on the back of the city ratepayer. It seems to me that when a system of feeder buses running to the tram termini is established all will be well. But there will no doubt still be people who complain of the "hardship" of walking a few chains on an asphalt path, or of changing from bus into tram. These people should live in the back blocks for a while and encounter true hardship. Ratepayer. Sir, —I must congratulate our city councillors on their foresight in their suggestion for the shorter penny sections This is a step forward in relieving the congestion in our main streets. Since reading the amended scale of fares, I have had proof of the advisability of this in discussions with many of my friends, who are all working men. The old scale of twopence for the first section was prohibitive for so short a distance, though we had to travel it after our day's work when we are tired and footsore. Faith in the Council.
