OPOTIKI SKATING RINK.
DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL. LICENCE FINALLY GRANTED. [Bif TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI. Sunday. The Opotiki Borough Council held a special meeting to consider an application from Mr. D. Cincota for a licence to conduct a skating rink in King George's Hall. The building inspector said he had deemed it advisable to get-outside advice on the condition of the building, and read a report from Mr. H. D. West, architect, who said he considered the building unsafe for skating. It was stated that the 9in. brick wall was, in places, 4in. out' of plumb and badly cracked in the centre, making it liable to fall outwards. Mr. Burke, a member of the council, who is also a builder, contended that the building was quite safe for a temporary period. He urged that a licence be granted. Mr. Hathaway said the council would be jointly and severally liable if any accident happened. After further lengthy discussion it was decided, by 4 votes to 2, to grant the licence.
