CITIZENS SEEK REDRESS

DAMAGE BY STORMWATER. THE DROWNING OF FOWLS. DAMAGE TO LADY S STOCKINGS Damage to a pair of lady's stockings, the drowning of some fowls, and the washing away of some clothes, were matters iaid at the door of tho City Council at last evening's meeting. Regarding the' first, .Air. E. Edwards wrote suggesting Mrs. Edwards be compensated for damage caused to a pair of stockings when she fell into a hole in Cheshire Street, Parnell. Stating that after heavy rain, flood water swept across the property at the corner of Bassctt Road and Ayr Street, Mrs. E. Howe informed the council she was preparing a claim against it for clothes lost wljen her clothes line was washed away. • A claim for 10s 6d in respect of each of four of his fowls drowned through storm water entering his property at Ro\al Terrace, Remuera, was made by Mr. J. P. Murphy. Messrs. G. C. Wilson and G. W. Parker complained that stornnvater was entering their properties in St. Andrew's Road, Epsom, and causing extensive damage. Reporting on the first matter, Mr. W. E. Bush, city engineer, said the footpath was being repaired and ho suggested hebe authorised to effect an amicable settlement. The drowning of the fowls was in no way clue to the negligence of the. council. and his answer to the two remaining complaints was that the properties were low-lying arid subject to stormwater flooding, which, however, would be minimised by projected works. A ripple of laughter ran round the council chamber after the reading of these items in the correspondence. The council decided to repudiate liability in the case of the fowls, and to reply in the other instances in the terms of the engineer's reports. In the case of Mrs. A. K. Beechan, of Sussex Street. Grey Lynn, who claimed compensation 'for the drowning of seven fowls when part of her property was inundated, the citv engineer was authorised to effect a settlement without prejudice.
