SPORT AT MOUNT COOK.

SKATING AND SKI-ING. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HERMITAGE (Mt. -Cook), Thursday. A hard frost overnight made winter sports conditions perfect at the Hermitage to-day. In anticipation of the frost the ice rink at the back of the hotel was hosed down with hot water and this morning the rink presented a surface like polished glass. Novices tried their luck on skates and although there were a few falls the novelty of real ice-skating was sufficient compensation for a few minor bruises. The skating session concluded with an exhibition of fancy skating and a fast game of hockey on the ice played for the first time at the Hermitage by a party of expert skaters. The day has been brilliantly fine and not for the past five years have conditions been so good for ski-ing, which is also proving very popular.
