RARE OLD COINS.
AN AUCKLAND COLLECTION The Dominion necessarily offers but few opportunities for the collection of old coins, but there are enthusiasts who succeed in spite of the difficulties. One of these is Captain James Stichbury of Ponsonby, who has been interested in rare coins ever since he came out to New Zealand in his boyhood in 1861 PI is treasures are mounted in two large glazed frames Most of them have been gathered in this country, but some were secured by their owner while in London
The oldest are groups of small white Roman coins dating back to the reigns of Constantine the Great, Julian and Valentinian 1., all ir> the fourth century A.D The collection excels in sets of Georgian copper coins, including three rare and re markabJe Irish coins A clearly-marked Charles i farthing designed by Bicot is a coin that has commanded a high figure at Christie's. Most beautiful of all is an Edward IV penny, dated 1465 on which the features of the King are portrayed with the most delicate craftsmanship.
