SIR GERALD STRICKLAND. HEAD OF NEW CABINET. A. an<] N.Z.-Stm. MALTA, Aug. 15. Sir Gerald Strickland, the leader of the Constitutionalists, has accepted the position of Prime Minister.

Sir Gerald will also bo Minister of Jus tice and head of the police force.

Sir Gerald Strickland was born in Malta in 1861. He was educated at Oscott College, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1888 ho was AssistantSecretary of Malta and Chief Secretary in 1889. From 1.902-4 he was Governor oi the Leeward Islands, and in 1904-9 Governor of Tasmania. I 1 rom 1912 to 1917 he was Governor of New South Wales. He was one of the Counts of Malta, under the title of Count della Catena. Since' 1924 he has been Conservative member of the House of Commons for the Lancaster Division. In 1921, when Malta was given a constitution similar to that of the Dominions, with a Senate and Legislative Assembly. Su Gerald was elected to the Assembly and became leader of the British Opposition. One of the main political questions in Malta is the language ques tion. Sir Gerald owns the Times of Malta. Malta became a British possession in 1814 under the Treaty of Paris. The population is about 220,000.
