BOWLING NOTES.

CARLTON TEAM'S SUCCESS

STRONG CHALLENGE RESISTED. | DEN 1 SON PINS CHANGE HANDS. ay SKIP. Prior to Saturday the Carlton team, skipped by A. B. Fookes, had successfully staved off some fairly strong challenging teams in the Edwin Stars contest, but the latest success on Saturday was achieved after a fairly even contest with tho Mount Albert team under the club's crack skip, G. Clark. The latter team was an all-star combination, as all the players are recognised skips. However, the prevailing opinion that a team with each man playing in his accustomed position, as was the case with the Carlton team, is better than a combination of skips, proved to be right on this occasion.

The opening stages of the game were disastrous for the challengers. A short shower of rain and the practice of Carlton confining the heads to short ones were against them. The Carlton team picked the going very well, and by the aid of particularly good play on the part of Bates and Deare, No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, quickly established a lead, being 11 to 2 on the fifth head. At the tea adjournment Carlton had the game well in hand, the score being 18 to 7 with thirteen heads gone. Upon resuming the Mount Albert men took a hand in the scoring. They got within three points of their opponents but then the leaders put on another spurt and ran out winners by four points. It was a pity the challengers were unable to cope with their opponents in the early stages, as, giv-n anything like an < i n chance at the interval, a really good tussle would have ensued. As it was the challengers materially reduced the leeway, but the effort was too much to sustain.

W. Johnson, Stanley, is the next challenging skip. The long tenure of the Denison pins enjoyed by the West End team was unexpectedly broken last Wednesday. Considering that the West End team had disposed of some solid propositions it was thought that the Dominion Road team, in charge of Hopye, had but a small chance of annexing the trophies. However, victory was apparent for the challengers long before the final head. The two features of West End's undoing were the unorthodox and "do or die" style of play of the opposing four and the fact of the team playing a little below form.

The winning skip, L. Neild, did not betray the confidence reposed in him of winning the Fonsonbv winter tournament. He and his team overcame the final obstacle on Saturday by having a comfortable win over Buchan's team. The game was fairly even until half-way through, but after that the winning team was decidedly superior. The indoor branch of bowling, so far confined to Auckland's friendly societies and lodges, has made rapid strides this winter. The time has been deemed opportune to form a governing body to look after the interests of the sport generally. An association was formed recently when officers were elected and rules' drafted. It is proposed to have inter-club competitions and tournaments on the second and fourth Saturdays in September.
