THE KIRIKOP UN I RAILWAY.

GOOD PROGRESS BEING MADt

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J DA KG A VILLE, Tuesday. Good progress- is being made with the railway bridge over the Northern War roa River near Kirikopuni, on tiie Kin kopum-Dargavilie railway extension. The ■ironwork on the upper structure is completed, and the girders on the land ends are ready to be placed in position. It is expected to have the Public* Works Do partment trains running over the bridge in about five weeks All work, including railway roads and bridges, on the section is being pushed oil at top speed m preparation for the summer traffic. Work in connection with the new butter factory at Kirikopuni, near the new railway station, is progressing favourably, aud it is expected that it will be available for use by the errd of Novem ber

Arrangements are well in hand lor the carriage of stcok, - produce, etc., to Kirikopuni when the railway is opened It is expected that several thousand fat lambs will be taken out of the Manga kahia Valley this season to the rail head The new road up the Mangakahia Valley to Kaikohe from Kirikopuni is being pushed ahead, and men are at present engaged on the erection of a viaduct with a 120 ft. span at the 11-mile peg. The annual smoke concert of the Dar gaville fire brigade was held last evening, nearly 100 prominent residents accepting th'e invitation to be present. The Mayor, Mr F A. Jones, presented service honours as follows: —Two years silver bar (15 years' service), Superintendent P. W. ilayward; two years' silver bar (nine years' service), DeputySuperintendent Hayward; three years certificate, Foreman H. Smith. Another attempt is to be made to inaugurate a continuous telephone service in Dargaville. At present the service is from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. daily except on Sundays, when the exchange is open from 9 to 10 a.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m • It is pointed out that a number of towns smaller than Dargaville are enjoying a continuous service At present there are 127 business and 262 residential telephones in use An effort is to he made to secure the additional subscribers required by the department.
