FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE.
OFFENCE THREE YEARS AGO.
MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE. A charge of obtaining from Robert George Robertson on January 1, 1924, £3 by false pretences was admitted in the Police Court yesterday by Roy Gault, aged 37 (Mr. Adams). Chief-Detective Ward said accused obtained the money by representing that his sister had died and that he required the money for burial expenses. Immediately after the offence he' left for New South Wales, and returned to Auckland from Suva last Sunday as a stowaway on board the Aorangi. Mr. Adams said the wife of a friend of accused had died, and his friend asked accused to assist him in obtaining the money for burial expenses. Accused borrowed £3 from Robertson for the purpose, but ho was under the influence of liquor, and stated it was for his own sister's burial expenses. Restitution would he made immediately. The magistrate, Mr Hunt, fined accused £2, "and ordered him to repay the £3, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
