TROUBLE ON STEAMER.
ASSAULT BY SEAMAN.
ROBBERY CHARGE FAILS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHTtISTCHURCH. Tuesday Three charges preferred against a young seaman, James Gordon Bennett, in tho Supreme Court to-day were that on July 6, on the steamer Maori between Wellington and Lyttelton, he robbed Johi> Robert Scollay, a seaman, of £lO with personal violence; that he stole £lO from Scollay and that he < assaulted Scollay. Accused, who was defended by Mr. E. Twyneham, pleaded not guilty. "There were a good many seamen on (he boat that night," said Mr. Twyneham. "About 60 of them had been paid off the Moeraki and they all had money. The stewards closed the bars on the ship." Counsel said there probably had been a fight between the two men, who no doubt had had a good deal of liquor. The jury returned a verdict of guilty on the charge of common assault only. They found accused not guilty on the other two counts.
Accused was remanded for sentence.
