BREACHES OF AWARDS.
PROSECUTIONS AT ROTORUA.
TWO SUBSTANTIAL FINES. [BY telegraph.-—own correspondent. 3 ROTORU/V. Tuesday. Three cases involving breaches of industrial awards were heard in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court to-day", before Mr. W. G. K. Kenrick, S.M. Mr. Wilson, inspector for the department, prosecuted. J. B. Morrison, boarding house keeper, was charged with failing to pay George Williamson, porter, the wages due to him for one week's holiday.
Williamson said when he was leaving his employ Mrs. Morrison paid him £1 10s short He asked for the balance and did not get it. He reported the matter to the inspector. When the time book was produced he said the amount as shown in the book was not there when he signed. He was paid by cheque. Defendant said Williamson was paid by cheque and cash In delivering judgment the magistrate said the wages book was not kept properly. He inflicted a fine of £3, saying that defendant was not charged with fraudulent intent, or he would have been liable to a fine of £SO.
Messrs. Schofielcl and Crowe, for failing to give notice that they had engaged an apprentice, were fined £3O and costs.
Tamak Takere, a bush contractor, was charged with failing to pay Alfred Wvatt and others wages due to them, amounting to over £BO. It was stated that Takere had paid his own store account and sold the timber, leaving the men's wages unpaid. The magistrate said he considered this a very bad case, and imposed a fine of £2O.
