TO-DAY'S ILLUSTRATIONS
WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS
Recent events and occasions of public interest are remarkably well illustrated in the pictorial section of the Auckland Weekly News, which is published today. The photographs are always an outstanding feature of the journal, and the current issue is sure of an enthusiastic reception from all sections of readers. Important events of the sporting, world are recorded by unusually good snapshots, and among these the ' King's-Grammar Itugbv match at Eden _ Park figures prominently Together with photographs of the teams and lively incidents of play, is a great picture of the King's supporters cheering wildly when their team took the lead. Racing enthusiasts, too, •ire admirably catered for with a fine series of pictures secured during Grand National iveek in Christchurch.
A milestone of progress in the history of Marlborough Province, the opening of the new hydro-electric works, makes a decidedly interestine page, while another South Island suhject. sure to arrest attention, is the gold-dredging operations at Rimu Flat, where excellent results are beinu obtained. The huge landslide which blocked the Hutt Road near Well lington and threatened the railway on Friday last makes a very striking picture that will he examined by all with great interest.
News by photography from overseas is featured by pictures received by the latest mails. Those include impressive scenes at the funeral of the late Mr. Kevin O'Higgins in Dublin, the unveiling of Scotland's national war memorial by the Prince of Wales, the British Army polo championship and the Menin Gate Memorial to the Empire's dead at Ypres. There are many further topical items from all parts of New Zealand The Hawke's Bay Hunt Club's recent point-to-point steeplechases provide a bright series, while the miscellaneous pages are full of interesting subjects. Outstanding, perhaps, are the following:—A tribute fo war heroes at Invercargill; the changing face of Auckland City; the Prime Minister as tennis player; fine new high school at Hastings; beauty spots in the, vicinity of Christchurch; Nelson's picturesque gardens: scenes on the West Coast, South Island; headquarters of mountaineering parties in the Southern Alps; and personalities of the week.
