FOOTBALL AND TROPHIES.
SPORTING SPIRIT MENACED. GAME. SECONDARY FACTOR. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Friday. That the too generous giving of Rugby football trophies, was constituting a grave peril to the game, was the strongly vojeed opinion of Mr. J. W. Danby, president, of the Thames Rugby Union, a,t a social function tendered the King Country touring team.
Mr. Danby said the Thames Union was overburdened with trophies, the giving of which was affecting the spirit ot the game. An outstanding instance of this undesirable result bad occurred in a recent Ranfurly Shield fixture. Matches were now being played more for the trophy than for the game. It was a refreshing experience for Tliames to play tlie King Country" in a match that did not involve a trophy. _ Mr. Otto, manager of the King Cou r V, r -' team, in voicing his agreement with Mr. Danbv, said there were far too many trophies for competition in the King Country.
