REPUBLIC OF GERMANY.

ANNIVERSARY MARKED.

APPRECIATION OF CHANGE.

WEAKENING. OF HOSTILITY.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright,

(Received August 12, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. BERLIN. Aug. 11

The eighth anniversary of the constitution of the Republic was marked by appropriate speeches in the Reichstag. The President, Marshal Hindenburg, was present. The Chancellor, Dr. Marx, in the course of an oration, said many sections of the community which previously were apathetic or hostile were now showing appreciation of Republicanism. A significant symptom was the increasing frankness in displaying the Republican flag.

The Prussian Government and the Berlin Municipality had this year encouraged citizens by ordering that the Republican colours should be flown from omnibuses and tramcars. These colours had even been hoisted on Potsdam public buildings for the first time, although the burgomaster declared it was illegal to issue nil order to fly them.

The most notable development was the freer display of the flag in residential quarters, while at holiday resorts there were more Republican flags and fewei timid Republicans. Herr Kardorff said II err Ebert anil Marshal' Hindenburg were the saviours of Germany, which a republic alone could lead in freedom and peace. Meanwhile it would proceed along its sorrowful path until the Rhine was free. Germany was heavily manacled by the Versailles Treaty, but would yet take an equal place among the nations, to which it was entitled, he said.
