DENYING THE DEVIL.
POLISH PREACHER FIRM. Even the devil appears to have legal rights in Poland which must be respected, at least the right of being recognised as really existing. Such at any rate is tho implication of the judgment of the criminal court at Brornberg in a case which was brought against the clergyman of the national church for heretical misdemeanors. One of the charges against him as recapitulated in the pronouncing of judgment was that "ho denies the existence of Satan." In consequence the clergyman was sentenced to twenty days' imprisonment and to a heavy fine. Upon this a Polish newspaper ironically remarks: "Truly, the man was guilty of a grave misdemeanor in denying the existance of Satan and at his punishment the friends of the devil will rejoice. More than this we cannot say, since it is not permitted to comment upon the judgment of the court."
