UNFENCED ALLOTMENTS.

gir t —In Wednesday's Herald is an account of a heavily-laden motor-lorry which got out of control in Parnell Road, but was successfully turned into Selwvn Terrace bv the driver, who had courage to stick to his post, and nerve to make the sudden turn into Sehvyn Terrace. But if he had not been able to stop his lorrv in time, he would have gone right over the precipice* as there is a stretcti of that street of about 150 ft. unfenced just at that corner. I have written three letters to the engineer's department drawing attention to the grave danger of this spot, but no notice is taken of them. Yesterday I saw two children playing there, one about five years old, and ontabout three. My heart nearly stopped when I saw one of them slip and ro. down, but luckily he fell against a tree. I bribed the elder one with a penny t, take the three-vear-old away. If thai child had disappeared over the precipice, or if the motor-lorry and driver had gone over, someone would have been compelled to erect a fence there; just as proper mains can be laid in lower Parnell when the whole of that district has had a marvellous escape from _ being burned out. But surely prevention is better than cure, and letters pointing put such a danger spot deserve better fate than non-recognition. It should be the duty of someone in the council's employ to see to such places being properly fenced, especially when attention is drawn to their danger. J- Thorns®. 251, Parnell Road.
