A MADMAN'S POEM.

Among valuable acquisitions to the British Museum recently accepted by the Trustees is " A Song of David," by Christopher Smart (1763). This was composed when for the second time in his life Smart was incarcerated in a madhouse—probably the Bethlem Hospital—where Johnson visited him, and lie is said to have written it on tho walls and door of liis cell. Only five printed copies of, the poem exist —one in the Bodleian, another in a private collection at Hamp stead, and two in the United States This copy was bought with other works, now presented to the Museum, at the Brit well sale, Mr. S: R. Christie-Miller, the donor, securing it for £590.
