NEWMARKET COUNCIL.
STORM-WATER DRAINAGE
A meeting of fclw. Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. The Returned Soldiers' Association wrote stating that owing to the many calls on the Poppy Day funds, the trustees would be unable to make the proposed payment ot £3O to the council foi the employment o! ex-soldiers. A letter was received from Mr. B Beckerleg stating that the boundaries of roads and railway at Victoria Crescent and King Street were very badly defined, the titles being involved to a certain extent, tie considered it advisable to have the boundaries re-surveyed. The Railway Department was prepared to pay one-half of the cost of the survey. A request from the Seddon Memorial Technical College Board for a donation toward the maintenance of the college was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. .... The drainage inspector reported that the abnormal amount of rain during the winter had severely taxed the storm-wafer drainage. It would be impossible to provide drainage to cope with such downpours as that of Monday night. The flooding of low-lying areas is becoming a serioiis problem, and the sanitary inspector's report recommended that the matter of necessary branches to connect with the main outfall be referred to the engineer for a report. The traffic inspector reported that drivers' licences to the number of 93 had now been issued.
