THEFT OF RABBIT TRAPS.
A FINE OF £ I IMPOSED
The theft of 36 rabbit traps, the property of Nora Gich, was admitted in the Police Court yesterday by Thomas Edwards. Chief-Detective Cummings said accused saw the traps at the rear of a house and asked a servant if he could have them. The girl said he would have to ask her mistress, but accused took the traps and sold them. He was under the influence of liquor at the tinm. Accused said the owner of the traps asked him to sell them. The chief detective said the complainant valued the traps at £5 Bs, but they were probably not worth more than £2 ss. The magistrate, Mr. McKean, imposed a fine of £l, and ordered accused to make restitution of £2 ss. Sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed on Margaret Speakman, aged 28, on a charge of vagrancy. Sub-In-spector Lewin said accused had been remanded and allowed her liberty on the understanding that she would leave for Australia to be married. Inquiries showed that she had not left for Australia, and she had been seen about the street. A charge of obtaining a quantity of ashes, valued at £3 Bs, from the Auckland Gas Company, Limited, by falsely representing that he was employed by E. and H. Craig, Limited, was preferred against George Edward Cox, aged 19 (Mr. Goldwater). Accused was remanded until Friday, the chief detective stating that further charges were pending. On a charge of being drunk in Federal Street, William John Kenny, aged 25, was fined 10s, and for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours he was fined £2.
