CRICKET IN ENGLAND.

POOR SCORE BY THE REST.

(Received July 24, 5.36 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, July 23. In the cricket match, England versus tha Rest, the latter in their first innings made 248. Sandham made 27, Hearne 110 not out, and Bates 49. No one else made a good score. Larwood, Tate and Freeman took wickets cheaply.

England had made 7 runs for no wickets (Hobbs 4, Sutcliffe 2) when stumps were drawn.

The match began in dull and threatening weather on a soft wicket. Sibbles replaced Nichols. Jackson won the toss and Percy Holmes and Sandham opened to the bowling of Tate and Larwood.

At lunch one v/icket was down for 69. The cricket was not exhilarating but it was sound and interesting. At the tea adjournment the score was 212 for four wickets. Hearne batted carefully and took 105 minutes to reach 50. He carried his bat and played a sound and solid innings, which occupied four and a-half hours out of the five hours during which the team batted. <

DISPUTE OVER TRIAL MATCH.

CLAIMS OF COUNTY GAMES. (Received July 24, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON. July 23. The fact that A. P. F. Chapman played for his county, Kent, in a match against Surrey, after he had refused to captain the England team against the Rest of England at Bristol for business reasons, has caused a controversy. The Surrey captain, P. G. Fender, said he strongly objected to the inclusion of Chapman in the county team, as the counties had agreed to let their players off if required for the test match trials. Surrey refused to play Hobbs against Somersetshire at the time of the trial match at Sheffield, after Hobbs, who had been ill, had refused to play at Sheffield but had recovered in time to play in the county fixture.

COUNTY MATCH RESULTS.

RAIN HELPS THE BOWLERS. A, and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, July 22. The results of the country cricket matches which ended to-day "were as follows: —

Playing against Hampshire, Surrey in their first innings made 228 (Sandham 59, Gregory 53). Kennedy took six wickets for 77 runs. Second innings 165 (Hobbs 67). Newman took seven wickets for 67 runs. Hampshire in their first innings made 268 (Brown 81, Mead, 61). Geary took six wickets for 50 runs. Second innings, 126 for one wicket (Brown 65 not out). Hampshire won by eight wickets. Playing against Notts, Essex in their first 1 innings made 121. Lavwood took six wickets for 46 runs. Second innings, 100. Voce took six wickets for 39 runs. Notts in their first innings made 196 (Whysall 75). Eastman took six wickets for 52 runs. Second innings, 26 for two wickets. Notts won by eight wickets. For Middlesex against Gloucestershire Hendren made 140. Haig took six wickets for 43 runs. For Gloucestershire, Parker took five wickets for 114. Middlesex won.

For Lancashire against Northants Tyldesley took five wickets for 47 runs. Lancashire won.

For Warwickshire against Kent Partridge took four wickets for 11 runs. Warwickshire won.

For Worcestershire against Yorkshire Rogers took five wickets for 54 runs. Yorkshire won.

For Sussex against Leicestershire A. E. R. Gilligan took four wickets for 15 runs. Leicestershire won.

Rain interfered with play in several matches.

GLENEAGLES GOLF MATCH. WHITCOMBE WINS THE FINAL. (Received July 24, 6.30 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, July 24. In the final round of ihe £IOOO professional golf match at Gleneagles Ch Whitcombe defeated Ray by 10 up and 8 to play. In tho third round Ray had defeated Kinch, 1 up; Havers defeated Twine, 3 up and 2; Cotton defeated Young, 2 up and 1; Whitcombe defeated Ockenden, 6 up and 5. In the semi-final round Ray defeated Havers, 5 op and 4, and Whitcombe defeated Cotton, 3 up> and 2. In a four-ball match the British open champion Bobby Jones and Kirkwood, America, defeated the British amateurs, C. J. Tolley and R. H. Wethered, by one hole, and in a foursome match they were all square.

FRANCE AND OLYMPIC GAMES.

DONATION TOWARD EXPENSES.

M. Coty, the proprietor of the newspaper Figaro, has offered to give 1,000,000 francs to ensure that France shall take part in next year's Olympic Games. M. Coty is prepared to risk a loss even if the Senate, which has adjourned the matter of a State subsidy, should refuse to provide any funds.

BOXING AT SYDNEY STADIUM.

At the Sydney Stadium last evening Johnny Squires, the heavy-weight champion of South Africa, and "Sunny" Jim Williams, drew, in a 15-rounds contest. The match was fiercely contested throughout.
