NEW RADIO STATION.

The opening of the new radio broadcasting station at Wellington on Saturday evening marks the greatest advance made in New Zealand to date in this social service which has grown so rapidly. Whatever else may be said about radio sei'vice in the Dominion, a remarkably high standard in power of transmission has now been reached. Not only will the programmes from Wellington cover the whole of New Zealand, they will be heard very far afield. It is evident, from messages received on Saturday evening, that all the island dependencies of this Dominion will be within reach of Wellington at some time in each 24 hours. To achieve this result was apparently, from official statements, in the mind of the Government when arrangements were made with the Radio Broadcasting Company to have this exceptionally powerful station placed at Wellington. The assurance of success has come early. Promises of technical excellence in the equipment have been made. The experiences of Saturday evening show them to have been fulfilled. Listeners praise the clarity and the volume of output from 2YA. New Zealand should be heard not only far, but well. At this stage, when congratulations on the success of the opening are due to all concerned, it is not out of place to suggest, too, that this brings a new responsibility. The programmes to be transmitted will be received critically over a very wide area. Their quality will require to be watched for the credit of the Dominion. Opening of the new station means that the necessity for a high standard has been increased in a degree equal to the advance this development brings.
