TOURIST TRAFFIC.
Sir^ —From time to time various articles have been published regarding tourist policy and the encouraging of tourists to visit this land of wonders. One who has visited mosit of the great, magnificent places of resort the world can oner and has taken particular care to become associated with tho people who visit them, must naturally draw conclusions* . Touching the Continent, especially France, fepain, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden and also America and Canada, the first thing that stHkes one is the class of tourist who visits these places. The majority are' more or less of the class who stay at medium-class hotels. . What brings them is tho low cost unbailed in y travelling across the sea for a month of enjoyment. This class is very numerous and contributes much to the revenue of these countries. Then,, qgain, at the very best hotels one meets quite a different class, well endowed with this world's goods. When in touch with these people one can see that their ideas are very different from the masses I ha,ve already mentioned. They are out to see the best and the finest a country can present. Money or time is not of much consequence to them. Distance is not a serious matter, provided they think they will be compensated for their trouble. This is the class we must cater for in New Zealand. It would be useless to expect the hundreds who cross the Channell with a capital of say from £lO to £SO to visit New Zealand. It is beyond their means. The other class—the rich and opulent—are plentiful enough and they alona are the ones we must expect as tourists for New Zealand. !n course of conversation with many of the latter the fact at once presents itsplf that they are likely tourists if the'goods are presented in an agreeable and tasty manner. Tlbis is tho class be attracted to New Zealand. There are many ways and means of doing it. I have plenty at my finger-tips to suggest that would prove a success. The game applies to America ; and Capada. " Walter V. Dabby.
