POLICE-VAN REMOVED.
VEHICLE FOUND UNDAMAGED
RAILWAY STATION INCIDENT.
An audacious act, evidently intended as a practical joke, was perpetrated outside the Mount IJden railway station at 6 o'clock on Wednesday evening, when a police-van, familiarly known as "Black Maria," was removed during the absence of the officer in charge. The vehicle was found undamaged in Boston Road, a short distance from the Mount Eden gaol, yesterday morning. The amazing feature about the occurrence is that such a conspicuous, and familiar vehicle should have escaped detection for so long, in spite of the I'act that neighbouring police stations were quickly advised of its disappearance. The police are reticent about the incident, but it is understood, the speedometer showed th« van had been taken on an extensive toor by the person or persons who removed it. The vehicle had been sent to the Mount Eden station to meet a person traveling under escort on the Whangarei express, and it was during the absence of the officer on the station that the van was removed.
