PETERSHAM MURDER.
Mcpherson before court. ARREST IN A HAYSHED. The labourer, Norman Clyde McPharson, who is charged with the murder at Petersham, Sydney, of the young waitress,. Martha Quin, whom he had bigamously married, was brought up at the Bathurst Court on June 17 and charged with the crime. Constable Warburton stated that at 8.50 o'clock the previous night, in a hayshed eight miles from Bathurst, he saw accused on a bundle of hay, with bags over him. Asked where he came from accused said: "From Orange, Cadia, and Carcoar." When asked where his teeth were, he said that he had none, and also denied having any tattoo marks. He said his name was Madden. When informed that lie resembled a man for whom the police were searching, he made no reply, lie afterwards admitted that his name was MacPherson, and he was taken to the police station and charged. The statement made by accused to Superintendent Leary occupies two sheets of foolscap. In it accused says that he joined a train in Sydney on Friday night and went to Blayney, later going to Carroar and Cadia. While at Cadia, where lie secured worl? at the iron mines, lie read in a newspaper that the police desired to interview him, and he intended going to them to prove his innocence of any implication in the crime. He left Cadia, and for some distance along the road was given a lift, in a motor-car. H<-> walked into Orange and went to a hnirdressing saloon for a shave, but as the saloon was full of customers he did not wait. After buying a loaf of bread he set out toward Baihurst with the intention of proceeding to Sydney to proclaim his innocence. Accused said he knew Martha Quin. He courted her and wanted to marry her. Last Friday he was at the Quins' house, and saw Mrs. Quin and a sister of Martha's. He admitted having gone through a bigamous marriage. The accused was remanded to Sydney. A cablegram published last "week stated that McPherson had made a full confession of the crime.
