DEVELOPMENT OF ROADS.
WORK OF HIGHWAYS BOARD. FUNCTION AT TAURANGA. [EV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Tuesday The chairmen, engineers and clerks of the various local bodies within the No. 3 Highways District were entertained at a ■dinner last evening by the chairman of the Tauranga County Council, Mr. R. King. Mr. M. H. Wynvard, a member of the Main Highways Board, and Mr. F. S. Dyson, district engineer of the Public W T orks Department, were also present. -Mr referred to the important duties ci the Public Works Department and the question of the institution of a petrol tax. Mr. Wynvard outlined the circumstances leading up to the formation of tha Main Highways Board, and said the Prime Minister deserved credit for tack ling the question. The board placed great importance on the proper mainten nnee of metal roads, which protected the investment and allowed for greater good road mileage, because it was cheaper to maintain than to meet recurring con struction. The whole success of operations was based on the co-operation of local bodies with the board.
