NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Matters were again very quiet at EHersIto yesterday and useful pace work on the sand was the order of the morning. The hurdles were removed and a few horses worked in the schooling track in the middle, among them being Kamebameha and Master Doon, who put in a useful task over a couple of rounds. Passionate (T. Chaplin), jumped a couple of hurdles satisfactorily, while Ar.sipa and Simplicitas went over the same fences twice, both fencing cleanly. ft is stated that the Randwick trainer G. Price, who i:j paying a short visit to the Dominion, was prepared to negotiate for the purchase of the three-year-old Valkon but inquiry elicited the information that the horse wa3 not for Bale. Valkon is a very promising horse with five successive victories standing to his credit and it is not; surprising that his connections are not anxious to part with him. A two-year-old gelding by Potoa from Chime is at present being pottered about at Ellerslie and later on he will commence hin preparation seriously under the direction of u Williamson. Like his half-brother Day Bell, ho han plenty of size and is a nicely topped horse but he does riot stand too wen in front and this detracts from his appearance somewha;. The speedy Gold Acre has been standing up to the tasks allotted him by M. Ryan and is rounding into shape nicely. The Linacre gelding has been oti the scene a long time, but a continuation of his present ri.te of progress should find him in good trim for the spring meetings. It should only be a master of Gold Acre going on the right way to win sprint events next season.

The Marble Arch gelding 81eepy Sol is back in work again after a spell and looks to have benefited considerably- by his holiday. Although he has not been a big winner. Sleepy Sol has managed to pay his way and' in the new season he should attain further success when the class is not strong. Owing to a none too robust constitution he haß npver been an easy horse to train, but W. Gall understands him thoroughly and shouid produce him in good order in the spring. H. Hastedt is keeping Golden Krist, Rapoa and Spalmore to useful tasks and his charges are all in good health. By his latest success Golden Krist won his way out of the hack ranks and in consequence he may be harder to place in future. Nevertheless, he is a genuine customer that can run a middle distance and there should be opportunities for him at the country meetings. The three-year-old King Emerald, wbase successes in the autumn put him out of the hack class, i 3 a regular attendant at Ellersiif- and he should be ready for the early spring meetings The Nassau gelding has good opeec' and properly placed he should achieve more success in the new season, even though he failed to make any sort of showing when competing among the open sprinters at his tast start. Perle de Leon favourably impressed the critics when he captured a couple of hurdle events at Hastings last week and a good future as a jumper is predicted for him. On the flat he displayed fail* form and in leading off with a couple of victories in his first two outings over hurdles he has certainly given promise of being an even better proposition over fences. Perle de Leon is a six-year-old gelding by Polydamon from Perle D'Or, hence a halfbrother to Molyne'ix, who won the Avondale Cup in 1921, and is still racing in Australia, where he won a hurdle event recently. It is doubtful whether Kamehameka has ever looked better than he does at present nnd he should strip a very fit horse at Trentham next month. The Demosthenes gelding won very decisively among the hack hurdlers in his last start, and despite the fact that he will be competing in open class at the southern meeting, he should bo equal to good showings in his engagements. For a beginner Troilus has shaped rather well at hurdling and in winning among the hack hurdlers at Wanganui he gained many admirers. Troilus is a young horse likely to improve and he is one that may make his presence felt in minor hurdle events at Trentham, more especially as he is in with a handy weight on the opening day.

The Te Awamutu trainer, G. Paul, will have a nice little string to commence the new season with and with ordinary luck he should win his fair share of races. In addition to Aussie, Papatu and Awarere, who have performed very creditably through the season now rapidly drawing to a close, and between them won eight races, he will have Sir Kay and a filly by Limond from Tivoli. Aussie, Papatu and Awarere have had a rest since the autumn, but they have been taken in hand again with a view to being prepared for spring racing. The Limond filly, who was purchased by Mr. P. A. Swney for 350gns. at the Trentham sales, has just been broken in and she is reported to bra very docile youngster. Catonian, the yearling gelding by Catmint, from Spinster, is a regular attendant at Ellerslie and his trainer. W. H. Patterson, has been allotting him useful tasks. He is a shapely youngster but appears to be rather highly-strung and will require careful handling. It is reported that Hoariri has gone amiss and is not likely to keep his engagements at Trentham next month. It will be bad luck for \V. Donaldson to lose his services at the present stage of the year, as Hoariri is only seen at his best in winter conditions, and has lately proved himself to be at the top of his form. It is stated that the two-year-old Merry Mint will be a competitor in minor events at Trentham nest mouth and he is being rnenioned as one likely to run well in the Trial Plate. So far Merry Mint has only one minor success to his credit, but he has not done a great deal of racing and his future is viewed very hopefully. The youngster is a member of H. Hickey's team at Hastings and all going well in the meantime it is intended to send him to Sydney in charge of J. Cameron after he gets through his Trentham engagements, with a view to racing ip the next Australian Derby. Merry Mint is a bay colt by Catmint, from Merry Roe. and when he was here in the spring he looked a youngster that would make into a fine horse.'

Mr. George Currie has chosen the name of Curtain for her. Whenuanui was given a spin over hair a mile on Thursday and shaped well enough to suggest .that, with a few sharp gallops, ho would be capable of running a very fast six furlongs, liowever, .it jis by no means certain that he will visit Trentham next month. . . , Alloway is looking, and going fairly well. He is to fulfil his engagements at Trentham. and with any luck in the runnia;? he might win a race at tlie meeting. ■ '
