ATHLETIC SPORTS.
LEAGUE FOOTBALL. THE PLAY ON SATURDAY. NEWTON DEFEATS RICHMOND. MARIST AND DEVONPORT LEAD. The opening matches in the second round of the Auckland Rugby League's senior grade competition were played on Saturday. A crowd estimated at 7000 witnessed a closely-contested game between Newton and Richmond at Carlaw Park. Newton gave its best display this season, its forwards being largely responsible for the victory. Richmond failed to produce the form it displayed against Ponsonby. On No. 2 ground at Carlaw Park, City gave a pleasing exhibition against Devonport, and on the run of the play the latter team was lucky to win by a margin ef seven points. At the Domain, Marist completely outplayed Athletic and won easily. The results were as follows: Newton, 19. beat Richmond, 11. Devonport, 10, beat City, 3. Marist, 34, beat Athletic, 9. NEWTON'S GOOD WIN. Superior speed and more finish to its attack gave Newton a fine win against Richmond. Richmond was first to attack and misfielding by Herewini bsw Taylor and Dixon rush play to Newton's line. However. Dufty saved with a powerful line-kick. A run by Taylor put Richmond in a good position, and Jenkinson carried play to the Newton line, where twioe in succession Taylor missed goals froia easy positions. Dufty was prominent in a fine passing bout, which enabled Little to race over to - score a good try. after he had handleo the ball twice in the rush. Dufty failed to convert. Morman made a fine run. and Hearing half-way passed to Dufty, who sent the ball back to him. Morman cleverly centred, and Clarke dribbled in past Hanlon, but Dixon saved a certain try. Davis made a beautiful opening for Richmond, but lacked support, and ft possible try was missed. Better fortune favoured Richmond in its next offensive. Parkes. Prentice. Jenkinson and Taylor handling in turn for Taylor to touch down. He failed with *the kick. "Half-time was called with the •cores: Newton. 3; Richmond. 3. Within two minutes of the commencement of play Richmond set up a strong offensive, and in a brilliant individual effort Parkes went over to score between the post 3. and Taylor goaled. The Newton forwards showed up in excellent loose rushes that drove Richmond back to its goal line. A fine solo effort by Hall nearly gave Newton a try. He was held up when over the line. Taylor made a brilliant save for Richmond, but his kick was weak, and Henry fielded the ball well and scored a spectacular try which Dufty goaled. making the scores equal. , Newton kept up the HenTy making an opening for Morman. who scored near the corner. Dufty missed the kick. A passing rush between Clarke, Hardgrave and Dufty saw the last-named dash over to score a try. which he converted. Led by Rhodes, the Newton forwards rushed play to Richmond's line, where Hanlon was tackled in possession, and Hardgrave scored Tiear the corner. Prentice made_ a run from near halfway, and Davis set his backs going in a well-planned movement. Jenkinson burst through the centre, and clean passing gave Taylor a good try. which he failed to improve. The game ended with the scores: Newton. 19; Richmond. 11. CITY TACKLES POORLY. Poor tackling proved City's downfall •gainst Devonport. The Devonport forwards were always superior in open play. City was unlucky on several occasions in the second half, when it did practically all the attacking. Devonport set up an early attack, and Cleaver made several good openings, but bad handling broke down each offensive. Ruby was prominent in a fine passing movement, and eventually L. Scott scored a pood try. which A. Scott failed to improve. Two penalties to Devonport fiaw St. George miss the first, kick, while, although he succeeded with the second, the goal was disallowed as a man was in front. A cross kick by Wetherill wbb intercepted by Beattie, who passed to Dixon, and a try resulted. A. Scott failed at goal. For not playing the ball City was penalised and Laing kicked a good goal. \ Wetherill made a brilliant run to halfway, where he passed to Perry, and Wade raced over to score. Leydon missed at goal. At halftime the scores were: Devonport. 8: City 8. Early in the second spell Devonport completely overran City, but Wetherill proved n so'id defender and twice in succession his deadly tackling held, up the offensives. Ruby was conspicuous in a solo run. but A. Scott dropped the pass, and a certain try wai lost. City was winning the ball from the scrum, and good nlay by Wetherill was well supported by and Hadley. but the latter's pass to Wade was missed. Passing between Dixon and O'Brien saw the latWs pass to A. Scott nullified, and Wetherill beat the opposition in a great run .to Devonport's twenty-five wherf a forward pass spoiled a certain try. City was penalised and St. George kicked a fine goal. The game ended soon afterwards with the scores: Devonport. 10: City. 3. MARIST V. ATHLETIC. At the Domain Marist proved superior to Athletic in all departments, and gave a finished display. Within a minute of the kick-off, Brisbane made a good opening, and King scored an unconverted try. Almost immediately, another fine passing bout ended in Knott scoring, for Gregory to convert. Marist forwards proved too cock) for Athletic, and O'Brien scored, and again • Gregory converted. Brisbane then scored an easy try which Gregory improved. A penalty goal by Lucas, and another goal by Loncville. were the only points scored by Athletic in the first spell. Just before the bell sounded Sweeney scored and Gregory kicked his fourth goal for Marist. Marist, 23: Athletic, 4. On resuming Athletic caught the Marist backs out of position, and Lucas made a clever opening for Avery to score. Longville goaled. King, the Marist wing, retired with an injury to his hand. Kirwan made the nest opening for Sweeney to score an unconverted try. Then Knott and Keenan added tries. Gregory converting the last. try. and the game ended: Marist. 34: Athletic. 9 SENIOR B SECTION. Point Chevalier beat Otahuhu by 19 points to 3. Ellerslie defeated Parnell by 21 points to 20. Owing to the state of the ground at Mangere, the game between Northcote and Mangere was not played. JUNIOR RESULTS. The cycling road race of 25 miles, promoted by the Port Nicholson Cycling Club, drew a record entry of eleven. Men on the 60s mark filled the first three places, the order being G. Smith, H. G.
