TIMARU TRAIN SMASH.
EVIDENCE BEFORE INQUIRY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHTJRCH. Friday. The Board of Inquiry set up by the Railway Department to investigate the circumstances connected with the railway smash at Timaru last Saturday morning, when a locomotive on the express to Invercargill -and four carriages were derailed, heard further evidence in Christchurch to-day. The board comprises iT^ IS ' ?• \ ® enzon '> district engineer at Dunedin, chairman, H. P. West district traffic manager at Dunedin, L. W Robertson, chief locomotive engineer for the South Island, G. B. Berlingshaw, inspecting engineer for New Zealand, and S. 11. Jenkinson designing engineer, mechanical branch, Wellington. The board heard evidence in Timaru on Tuesday and Wednesday and began its sitting m Chnstchurch yesterdav The evidence heard yesterday related" mainly to locomotive design and construction ' The members of the board inspected the damaged locomotive at the Addington workshops yesterday afternoon.
