A LINK WITH BURNS.
The death is announced of Mr. James Irving, of Edinburgh, who was well known in the building trade, having carried on a tile business in that city for » number of years. He was really a tile draughtsman to trade, starting in & London office and going to Edinburgh over 50 years ago to take up a similar position with a firm there, before starting in business on his own account. Mr. Irving's father was Mr. William Paton Irving, who married Jessie Lees, niece of Robert Bums' " Bonnie Jean. His father was also a full cousin of Thomas Carlyle. He carried on a shoemaker's business in the High Street, Dumfries, in a shop nearly opposite the " Hole i' the Wa" " Inn, and was Dean of Guild and also Dean of the- Corporation of Shoemakers of Dumfries.
