BUSINESS AT THAMES.
YEAR PROVES SUCCESSFUL. SEEKING AVENUES OF TRADE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES, Friday. The annual report of the Thames Chamber of Commerce, which has a membership of 78, expresses satisfaction at a successful year of business in Thames. The improved prospects of the dairying industry, says the report, have already induced a more buoyant tone in trade, and with the completion of the Hauraki Bridge duriwg the coming year it is confidently anticipated that a new era of business prosperity for the town will ba established. In connection with the progress of the harbour improvement scheme consideration was given during the year to schemes for increasing the trade of the port. Inquiry was made regarding the possibility of direct trade with the Southern and East Coast ports, and other possible sources of 4rade were likewise examined. Pending the further advance of the improvement scheme, however, no definite arrangements can be concluded. Following on a deputation of East Coast settlers and representatives of the chamber to the Minister of Public Works, it is hoped si further avenue of trade to the town will be opened up by the construction of the Tairua-Kauaeranga Road. Work on the road was commenced, but unfortunately the men were afterwards withdrawn and the settlers are still left in comparative isolation.
