STUD NOTES.

STEEPLECHASE SIRES. BY PHAETON. An interesting record in connection with the Great Northern Steeplechase is the large number of sires that are represented on the winning list. Spalpeen, whose son El Gallo won twice, and who had another winner in Waimai, heads the list. Captivator, whose son Levanter won on two occasions; Hippocampus, who had two winning representatives in Shillelagh and Moccasin: Castor, whose son Kiatere won twice; Leolantis, who claims Capitol and Red McGregor; Sir Knox, who had a double winner in Sir Roseberry; and Gluten, with Gluepot and Dick, are the only other stallions to claim more than one winner, and that, of course, shows that 34 different sires figure on the winning list in connection with the 43 races that have so far eventuated for the big cross-country race at Ellerslie The following is a list of the winners in the Great Northern Steeplechase, with the names of their sires and their grandsires attached:— Macaroni, by Gladiator (son of Gladiateur). The success of horses tracing to St. Simon on the sires' side was a striking feature of the racing at the recent winter meeting held at Ellerslie. more than two-thirds of the winners during the three days being so ranged up. Town Guard, Glenidle. Wedding March. King Lti, Pendavies. Golden Krist, Day Bell. Beau Cavalier, Tinokoa. kaheOKamehameha, Master Doon, Tuki, Form, Hoariri and Harbour \ lew were the horses that kept up Ihe record of the family at Ellerslie. VALAIS AS A SIRE. Valais has such a wonderful record as a sire that much interest is always centred in the figures opposite his name in the winning sires' list. Notwithstanding that Valais has had no outstanding two or three-year-old representatives this season, his older pro«euy have acquitted themselves so well that tiis position as the most successful sire in Australia for 1926-27 is assured. Up to April 30 his winning descendants numbered 21. and their earnings ran out to £38.798. Writing in the Sydney Referee "Pilot" says:—"lt is difficult to make a forecast for next season, as, while few of Valais' older- representatives that will be racing have staying credentials, there .may be possibilities m that direction associated with some of his three-year-olds. Among the sprinters, Valais will have at least two up to weight-for-age form in Fujisan and Valicare. but, even with that in his favour, lie is far from a certainty for first place in next season's winning stallions list. At the same time, it would be hard to jrnck the particular one likely to beat him. ENGLISH SIRE PURCHASED. Another English-bred sire will shortly be included among the thoroughbreds held in this Dominion. Advices to hand from Christchurch state that the South Canterbury studmaster Mr. A. F. Roberts, who imported the Radium horse Is.ightraid a few years ago, has purchased another horse in England. Mr. Roberts' latest purchase is Polazel, by Polymetus (son of Cyllene) from Ardazel, by John o' Gaunt (son of Isinglass) from Ardrogena. by Flonzel 11. (brother to Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee) from Ardmore, by Gallinule. It is a pedigree full of stout staying blood There are three strains of Isonomy. the greatest stayer of his day, two of t them introduced through his best sons. Isinglass and Gallinule. while two infusions of St. Simon are backed up by Hamp%sn. Polazel, who is now in his sixth year, is expected to arrive in the Dominion early in August. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. It is somewhat rare in these southern lands to hear of a stallion developing the pronounced vicious temperament, but in the old countries there are horses which it is dangerous to approach. In referring to the French stallion Massine a writer in Horse and Hound remarks: —"Massine, a six-year-old son of Consols, is very difficult to handle as a stallion. When I saw Lim in his box last season at Mr. O. Homberf* s stud he had a. lone, heavy iron chain hanging from his head trailing # on the floor of tho box, and the stallion man darted in to catch him _by the endooff f > the chain as if he were a lion at the Zoo. It is computed _ that up to date descendants of Magpie have won stakes to the value of £81,238 in the five seasons thev have figured on the turf. Though he will not have Windbag to compete for ram next season, it would seem _to be pretty safe to conclude that Magpie's total will be raised to over £IOO.OOO when the season of 1927-28 closes. The date on which a horse who won a place in the category of the great was foaled is an interesting point. Windbag, whoso racing career closed this year, it is placed on record, was foaled on November 6. 1921, and he ran his first race on December 29. 1923. RANDWICK TRAINING NOTES NEW ZEALAND HORSES.
