THE PRICE OF TIMBER.
Sir,—There is much agitation to get an impost on timber, and the Minister is said to be sympathetic. If a duty is imposed I trust the Government will see that the. price of local timber is not increased. In your nature column you have a paragraph about the borer in a new piece of timber and also m a house up only three or four years. This calls for some attention bv the authorities. Timber is stacked for ages in the yards and may be a breeding ground for the borer. I have myself refused suspicious looking timber, but I was assured the borer was dead. People are buying second-hand timber full of borer (they have to on account of the price of new) for sheds, etc., thus taking the borer to their living homes. Whatever is done the price should not be allowed to get any higher. As it is now people are being forced to use bricks and cement on account of the price. Kahikatea.
