NATIVE LAND CLAIMS.
DISCUSSION BY COMMISSION. FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR CROWN. [BY TELEGRAPH.-—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Redress for lands confiscated by the Government in Taranaki, the Waikato, Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and East Coast districts during tho Maori wars, was again discussed before the Confiscated Lands Commission to-day.
For the Crown, Mr. C. H. Taylor denied the allegations concerning lands in Hawke's Bay, to the effect that the natives had been unfairly treated. He submitted that all the promises concerning the Rauhauroa Block had been carried out, and that there were no grounds for granting compensation. Dealing with allegations that the price paid for the sale of Mahaka, in, 1851, was too low, Mr. Taylor said the natives entered into the agreement without compulsion, and they should abide by it. He denied that land had been improperly included in certain deeds of sale made to the Government. If there was land so included, he said, it was so long ago that there was no justification for reopening the question. The commission adjourned until Thursday morning.
