LORD MAYOR PROPOSAL.
INTRODUCTION OF ALDERMEN MR. C. J. B. NORWOOD'S VIEWS. [BY TELEORA PH. —OWN CO/.SRESPONDEST. ] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The proposal that Auckland should have a Lord Mayor was to-day referred to the retiring Mayor of Wellington, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, who expressed the opinion that the time was not yet ripe for the appointment of Lord Mayors in New Zealand. Mr. Norwood said he thought, nevertheless, that if the title would he regarded in greater honour, and give greater dignity to the position, such a change would do good. It would he a recognition by the citizens of the responsibilities which rested upon the shoalders of the chief citizen, and would show a spirit of civic pride. The election of a Lord Mayor involved the appointment of aldermen, a system which might not meet wsth approval in such a democratic country as New Zealand. Such a system would enable bono;,-r to be conferred on men who bad served the city faithfully and well for a period of years, men whose services as advisers would be irivaluabte to the city, while new blood would be infused from tsme to time at the election of councillors.
