AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.

TO-DAY'S ILLUSTRATIONS. GREAT VARIETY AND INTEREST. Another large and attractive pictorial section is published in the latest issue of the Auckland Weekly News, which is on sale to-day. The up-to-date photographs illustrate an extremely wide range of interesting subjects, the whole providing a feast of "news by photography. Outstanding, perhaps, is the centre double-page. It is devoted to a remarkably fine series of pictures recording the opening of the 1927 shooting season in the North and the South Island. Artistically arranged, they make a very attractive feature which is sure to be appreciated by all. This week's frontispiece is another gem of the photographer's art that will matke a strong appeal. It is a wonderful study, having for its subject Makurata, a wellknown Maori chrj-acter of the Urewera Country, who was the youngest wife of tlie notorious chief Te Kooti. Another highly-interesting and picturesque series illustrates life and scenes on Little Barrier Island, the Government sanctuary for native birds in the Hauraki Gulf. Recent happenings of a sensational nature are well recorded. There is a striking half-page plate of the stranded passenger steamer Riverina, while the tragic fire at Napier, and Palmerston North's big blaze, are also illustrated by first-class photographs. Further subjects, gleaned from many sources throughout New Zealand and other lands, include the following:—Arrival of two immigrant ships at Auckland last week: Onehunga's jubilee; fine types of Wanganui's rising generation; Lyall Bay Harriers commence their new season; Wellington Karitane Home opened to receive patients; the Liverpool Grand National, over the most difficult steeplechase course in the world ; tragic aeroplane smash at Duke of York's reception in Melbourne.; and personalities of the week.
