Merewether, and occupied by Mrs. McCarthy, being partially destroyed. Mr. A. Herd, district fii-e officer, stationed at Castlecliff, suffered severe burns to the face and hands. An outbreak of fire occurred this evening in the boiler-house of the Whangarei dairy factory through a pile of sawdust and shavings becoming ignited. Fire broke out in the store owned by Langley and Co., produce merchants, in Karamu Road, on Sunday morning at 2.15. swept through to the rear of a corrugated iron shed at the back of the shop, which was built in brick. The brigade made a good save, but a large stock of seeds, onions, potatoes, chaff, etc., valued at about £ISOO, was ruined by fire, smoke and water. The insurance on the building is £750 and on the plant £l5O in the Phoenis Office. COTTAGE BTJRHED TO GROTJHD, 1 * OCCUPANTS' NARROW ESCAPE. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION*.] WAIROA (H. 8.), Monday. One of the freezing works cottages, occupied by an employee, Mr. W. Gates, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. Mr, Gates, his wife arid family just escaped in their night attire, saving practically nothing. The brigade used tha freezing works tow-pressure water supply, as the cottages are now outside the borough bound ary, and made a splendid save of the several adjoining buildings. Tiie cottage was insured for £625 id the Eaglo, Star and British Dominions Office. The contents also were insured. OUTBREAK AT CHRISTCHURCH. The house was owned and occupied by Mr. William Noonan and was insured for £2OO in the Victoria Office. Th« furniture was insured lor £75 in the sasu office.
