BETS WITH BOOKMAKER.
RECENT CHRIST CHURCH RAID.
PROSECUTIONS AT DANNEVIRKE.

Two cases arising out of a recent police raid on premises occupied by Alfred Vivian Whitta, at Christchurch, were heard before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M.. in the Ds.nnevirke Police Court to-dav. Percy John Barton admitted betting with Whitta on February 8-
The police said that as the result of the raid in Christchurch certain documents were seized by the police. Among them was one which went to show that defendant had bet with the bookmaker. When interviewed by the police defendant readily admitted it. Mr. Blakiston, for Barton, said the latter was a blacksmith in a small way, a widower with eight children, and had made a bet apparently with the ides of augmenting his income. Counsel asked for a light penalty The magistrate said he did not know of anv more illusory way of adding to one's income than i>v letting on horse racinp. Defendant was liable to a penftltv of £IOO As this was the first case of'its kind in the district ho would fine defendant £5 and costs, 10s. Konreth Matheson, who was similarly charged, was also fined £5 and costs.
