TOO MANY HOLIDAYS.
HEADMASTER'S CRITICISM. DELAYS TO SCHOOL WORK. LITTLE REAL PROGRESS MADE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. "Apart from relieving teachers there have been eight changes of assistants on the staff," said the headmaster of the Te Aro School at last night's school committee meeting. "With the latestaddition to the regulations whereby three out of my 17 assistants are appointed for one year only, the stall is rendered more unstable than it has ever been before. Two years ago there was a great cry about stabilising staffs, and this is the result. The consequence must be a considerable addition to the time required for many pupils to pass through the standards. "Year by year teachers complain of the impossibility of getting their work done owing to the interruptions that occur. The causes leading to these interruptions may in themselves bo very worthy of support, but I contend that the school's job is something apart from the making of a public show, assisting in the advertising of some good object, or of raising money that should ba supplied by the State. "Little work of any value has been accomplished so far this year. The unsettling consequent upon the preparation for the living flag and the Royal visit followed soon after by an extended Easter holiday, Anzac Day, and the approaching term holidays has made school simply a succession of the beginning of things. Interest is killed and no solid work has been done."
