GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
SPEEDING BY MOTORISTS. Speeding on the concreted sections of the Great South Road in the Manukau County has increasod lately and is proving a serious menace, according to the chairman and members of the Manukau County Council. "There is urgent need for an inspector," said the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, at a meeting of the council yesterday. "Some motorists drive at 50 miles an hour, and as there are several schools on the road the children's lives are in constant danger. The Otahuhu, Papatoetoe and Manurewa districts have an inspector of their own, but there are portions of the highway under the council's care which' are tinpatrolled." He suggested the council should grant a subsidy of about £SO to the salary of the present inspector, who could patrol the road between Otnhuhu and Papakura. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, the riding member, and the county engineer.
