WARTIME PENALTIES.
THE AUSTRALIAN FORCES. SUPPOSED ORDERS NOT ISSUED. (Received April 13, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Stin. LONDON, April 12. In the House of Commons Sir Newton Moore, Conservative member for Richmond, asked whether any records existed at the War Oftice as to any orders issued bv general officers of the Australian forces during the war regarding the penalties which would be inflicted on machinegunners who might be guilty of quitting their posts. The Secretary of State for War, Sir L. Worthington-Evans, said there was no record of such orders. He had conferred with the member of the House of Commons who originally made the statement and both he and the speaker were satisfied that the document the member had seen did not necessarily bear the interpretation which had been placed on it.
